donna's impressions

Make The Voices Stop

For most of nursing career I treated clients with "normal ailments like diabetes and heart disease. Recently I have been working in a mental health center three days a week as we build our photography business. It's unfortunate that so many people look at mental illness as a weakness or defect rather than what it is, an illness like diabetes. The brain has a deficiency or in the case of schizophrenia, an excess of dopamine. And medication is needed to bring that person back to health. Yes the behavior is difficult to understand, but the individual is well aware of this and struggles to be "normal" and fit in. It has been a real eye opener the past seven months, to see the open honesty of these people as they struggle with their disease and try to fit into a "normal" society.
