In the Workhouse

Today the U3A Family History group had a session on the Poor Laws and workhouses. One of my  3 x great grandfathers died in Godstone workhouse in Surrey.  He died in 1876, aged 78 of "Old Age" and haematemesis which I find is vomiting blood.  Could be caused by stomach ulcers or tumours He must have been very poorly. In the 1871 census he was living with one of his daughters but he must have been too ill for her to cope with which will be why he ended up in the workhouse.  It was used as a hospital for the poor.
