I finished an ebook on my kindle today and then remembered that I wanted to do Love Blippin Books so here it is for LBB 10: Spooky booky

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

It's a horror story set in the Arctic. A group of young men travel to Gruhuken for a year-long expedition. It's 1937 and travelling to Spitsbergen - let alone live there for a year - is a lot more dangerous than it would be even today. During their journey to their destination by ship, the men are warned to stay away from Gruhuken. But no real reason is given to them and so the group decide to go through with their plans.

The book is written as a diary by Jack, one of the group members. He's the only one of the men who isn't an Oxford graduate which leads to tension in the group. Things go wrong from the beginning but they're determined to finish the expedition successfully.

The story develops slowly and I enjoyed it a lot. The horror is subtle and not the right book if you like bloody horror stories. At first it reads like an expedition journal but eventually it begins to make you feel uneasy. Very good book in my opinion.
