Extraordinary municipal assembly

A citizens' movement in our small town has been able to call an extraordinary municipal assembly with the collection of the needed signatures. The only item on the agenda was whether or not the town must cancel the contract with the federal government for the use of the civil defence facility as temporary asylum accommodation.

It is something new as never before a municipal assembly has decided whether an asylum centre should be banned from the city, which is why there was interest in the matter beyond the region.

A record number of 700 people with voting rights turned up and because there was no room big enough for it, the meeting had to be held live between the school sports hall and assembly hall.

After all the votes in favour and against, the vote was taken after around 1 3/4 hours and the result (with a show of hands) was so clear that the mayor was even able to dispense with counting the votes. The motion was clearly rejected and the contract will not be cancelled.
