Calcot Dovecot

I headed off to that most dangerous of Swedish furnishing shops today for some more storage to hold my growing art materials collection - and of course spent money!

Within a mile's walk of the store I discovered this folly built on the top of a hill in the middle of a field.  Built around 1768, it is said to have been commissioned by the Reverend Henry Wilder as a very grand gesture for his future wife, Jane Thoyts, who lived in Sulhamstead House nearby. They went on to have a successful marriage. The tower was converted to a dovecot years later, but today now seems to be a bit of a magnet for graffiti. Nevertheless, it makes for an imposing view - which must be seen large.
