Huangshan Porters

For about 30Y (£3.00 ), Tourists can buy walking sticks to help them up the mountain. They also bring snack food packs, for which there are shallow concrete bowls at intervals for rubbish. Or, as in UK, people manage to climb up the mountain with it but find it too inconvenient to carry down and so just drop it.
To deal with this there are teams of porters who make the trip up and back every day. On the way up they carry enormous loads to service the snack booths and Hotels, of which there are quite a few tucked away. There is no other means of transport. The porters wear a wooden yoke and balance the boxes, as above. They also carry a forked wooden stick as tall as their shoulder which they can rest the load on and have a breather.as these two men are doing. On the way down they pick up the rubbish for sorting and disposal at the bottom. Very low paid Heroes!
