Meet up

I met up today with my friend Rosemary, who retired from our organisation last year and is thoroughly enjoying not working … although, she appears to be exceedingly busy doing other things!

Anyway, it was great to catch up in Saughton Psrk in the west of Edinburgh.

Saughton Park opened in 1910 and is an absolutely glorious green space with a bandstand, a glasshouse, walled garden, amongst  its many attractions inc. the Garden Cafe where we met up.

It is also the UKs first eco powered Green space.

The system in the park, which became operational in  2020, uses micro-hydro technology on the Water of Leith, generating electricity for all the parks’ needs, including the running of two ground source heat pump systems. These provide heat for the park’s glasshouse, buildings and the café.

By combining a micro-hydro scheme to generate electricity and ground source heat pumps to generate heat, the park’s natural assets are now helping decarbonise its energy demand.

Estimates suggest this new technology will prevent more than 90 tonnes of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere each year – the equivalent of fully charging 11.5 million smartphones.

I hope you are having a good day.
