St Piran's Day

March 5th is St Piran's Day and is widely celebrated in Cornwall. Celebrating it in our own quiet way we crossed the River Tamar to visit Cotehele House and gardens. There was a welcome in Cornish at the reception and the Cornish flag was flying above the house.
St Piran travelled to Rome and was said to have performed many miracles, including the bringing back of soldiers from the dead. Unfortunately though he fell foul of the Irish kings and was thrown into the sea tied to a millstone. Miraculously, he floated across the sea to Cornwall where he was washed ashore at Perranporth. He established an oratory nearby which can still be seen amongst the dunes.
