Curral das Freiras

A stunning valley village surrounded by jagged mountains a few miles inland from Funchal. Popular venue for daytrippers, so we got there early, before the clouds had lifted off the peaks, and had a wander round the village. Typical in Madeira to find an Australian tree fern growing by waste ground and people's back yards. A car on a roof and a lady hanging out washing, seemingly oblivious to the vistas all around.
Afterwards we bought some chestnut tart and a chestnut biscuit and could have had chestnut cake, chestnut chocolate and chestnut fudge too!
