Grotesques…

…According to a little booklet by Terence John Newholm Buxton has over one hundred and fifty grotesques in the town. There is still a lot to learn about many of them. The above are listed in the booklet as ‘No 9’.
The house they adorn (just under the eaves) was listed as an ale house in 1840 but may date from much earlier. These ones have been repainted (very well) and are some of the most colourful ones in town.
Apparently (according to the book) during the medieval period buildings, and their grotesques, were frequently painted.

I bought the book a while ago but these little grotesques were (I felt) quite hard to find.

Anyway..The wine forecast was fairly parsimonious today. (And accurate).
Happy Friday one and all!

Oh, and felt sheep? Hmmm.. they’re tricky little little varmints :-)
