Longshank's Last

Day off so joining Mum and Dad on a walk along stretches of Hadrian's Wall.

Today we started in Bowness-on-Salway and finished in Carlisle. This is a memorial to King Edward I of England. Known as “Longshanks”, or the "Hammer of the Scots", he died on Burgh Marsh on 7th July 1307 on his way to crush the Scottish rebellion led by Robert the Bruce. The current red sandstone monument was erected by the Earl of Lonsdale in 1803, replacing an earlier obelisk from 1685.
