Story Time

"Women’s History month is being celebrated once again at the Southwest Harbor Public Library, with a show of diverse art works by Mound Desert Island women that opened with a reception Saturday morning.

The first work to catch one’s attention is a charming and apropos mixed-media shadowbox, or diorama, created by Tremont artist Kathie Pratt, depicting a librarian reading to a group of enthralled youngsters. In her artist’s statement, Pratt writes that while we live in an area rich with abundant natural beauty, it lacks in cultural diversity.

“Librarians, especially children’s librarians, bring us to a world we don’t experience firsthand,” Pratt writes, “stories about people whose experiences are different than our own promote empathy and social justice, which is important, especially in this era of book banning.”
