Channelside and the slag bank

The slag bank. When the steel and iron works began production in the 19the century  what was left after the iron ore was removed and was dumped .. the slag. Over the years the pile grew until it was 100ft high and half a mile long.
In the 1970s some of the slag was used as hard core for road building. Then in the mid 1990s the main pile was grassed over , trees and shrubs were planted and it became part of the Channelside walk.

Today there was no wind and quite mild . The Dock Museum carpark is full because of the work so we parked farther up .
We hadnt planned to go to the top but it was a pleasant day so we walked on.
A bit too overcast for stunning views towards the Lake District hills  .
