A concrete love affair

Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial in Valletta

Really moving and special visit to the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial in Valletta to pay respects to my Great Uncle, Flying Officer, Jack Middleton who is memorialised at this beautiful place.

Jack’s plane was seen ditching off the coast of Italy on December 31st 1944. Sadly he never returned from the war, never returning to his loving family or his fiancé. Ive got so many letters my Grandma (his older sister) had kept, including the envelope pictured which is a letter she penned on NYE 1944 (the actual day his plane went missing) but was returned to sender.

Over the years we’ve heard so much about Jack, a young man and talented pilot/navigator missing his family who signed off every beautifully written letter “your loving Brother and son”. But thanks to your sisters, we can take pride in you and everything you were and your memory will live on…
