White Bay Power Station

The White Bay Power Station, built from 1912-1917, powered Sydney's trams, the rail network and provided electricity to the grid. It remained in service until 1984 and was heritage listed in 1999.

Remediation and conservation work commenced in 2021. You can deduce from these dates that there were plenty of years during which the building was inhabited by pigeons, rats, mice and their poop but eventually it became what it is today - repurposed for cultural and creative purposes.

Today I went there for an exhibition, under the 24th Biennale of Sydney, of the works of 19 artists who had all created something very large. Smaller works would have been lost in the cavernous spaces. What I loved most was the retention of a lot of the machinery once used in the production of electricity - works of art in themselves.

My main is a section of a large board of ammeters, now protected under glass which provided reflections of the outside windows of the building. Not sure what the sign in the extra means. Danger perhaps.

Thanks for hosting AT Ingeborg.
