HOODED MERGANSER

Now that the local lakes and ponds are pretty well thawed the migratory ducks are returning in large numbers.  This is the Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) and its "hood" is in the relaxed position.  It's quite spectacular when erected.

Its beak is un-ducklike as it's not a filter feeder but rather specializes in eating fish and aquatic invertebrates.  It is serrated and narrow to allow for ease in grasping its prey.

This bird is native to North America but populations exist in Europe, England and Ireland....but they are feral in nature and presumed to be escapees from private collections.

BEST IN LARGE.
