Bastion Waldeck

The Waldeck bastion was built between 1688 and 1690 to strengthen the southeast side of the city. The idea came from Daniel Wolf van Dopff, engineer-fortification master in Maastricht under the military governor Georg Friedrich, Count of Waldeck-Eisenberg. The bastion was named after this.
Georg Frederik van Waldeck-Eisenberg (Bad Arolsen, January 31, 1620 - there, November 19, 1692) was a German nobleman and a prominent soldier in the service of the States General of the Netherlands. He was, among other things, a general and field marshal in the Dutch army and military governor of Maastricht.
