Everywhere I look

I was reading this book - Bert Hardy’s Britain - when Anniemay took her sneaky blip on Sunday.  It’s a present from her, so I guess that gives her some rights to exploit it.

The words on this page just leapt out at me as something to aspire to.

It’s an astonishing and incredibly moving collection of photographs by Bert Hardy.  It’s also an astonishing and moving account of his life; from poverty - working at the age of 9, before school, to support his family - to becoming, arguably, the greatest photojournalist at Picture Post magazine.

The subject of this particular book is Britain in the 1940s and 50s - the story told through photographs of people from all walks of life, in all sorts of situations.  Many of the images are bleak in terms of conditions that some people had to live in, but there’s also humour.  And bravery.  He put himself in considerable danger recording the Blitz.

There’s more about Bert Hardy at The Photographer’s Gallery.
