Mrs Sixthland bought this book in the gift shop of the hotel we were staying at in Monterey (where Cannery Row is set, in case you didn't know). She read it slowly saying it felt like it was extending our trip to California. She's finished it now and loved it so I couldn't resist picking it up and started reading it today for the second time. When I first read John Steinbeck in my teens, I was totally beguiled by his stories and prose and read all I could get, one after the other, but I think this is still probably my favourite. It's just as wonderful now...
