Slavonian Grebe

This was a bit far off, so quality isn't great, but it isn't often I see one in breeding plumage. A few spend the winter here, and I sometimes see one or two from Scapa pier or on the Loch of Harray. This one might summer here but is more likely to head off to some Highland loch to find a mate.
I walked along the beach on barrier 4 in a very cold NE wind. Still the wrong direction for helping birds migrate from the south but there were skylarks, meadow pipits, lots of pied wagtails that may have come up. Also there- long-tailed ducks, sanderlings, ringed plovers, reed buntings, stonechats etc. Not great conditions for cameras with sand blasting along the beach.
