Gaia's Child

Home Sweet Home?

While on our morning walks, the Big White Dog and I have been watching a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers hollow out a hole in a dead pine tree. They've been working on it for a couple of weeks now. I'm hoping that they decide to call it Home and raise their chicks there. I doubt that the lucky neighbors are even aware of this ongoing wonder in their front yard. These photos are of the male, the female had flown off, no doubt in search of breakfast. This is a perfect example of why leaving dead trees alone, where it's safe, is so important for cavity nesting birds like the Pileated. So...fingers crossed, Watch This Space! m
