Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

We stayed overnight in La Fortuna, well developed tourist town and the ‘jumping off point’ for Arenal Volcano National Park.

Arenal is Costa Rica’s most active volcano and has a perfect cone shape….. or so I’m told as we couldn’t see it. It was shrouded in clouds and the rain was teaming down!

We set off for the Park first thing to do some walking. Waterproofs were essential today! The rain was so heavy the wildlife and birdlife were in hiding.  We did see the 400 years old Ceiba tree.

Of course the rain stopped when we finished our walk! We carried on driving round Lake Arenal to get to Monteverde. It’s a slow windy route which gradually ascends to 5000 feet.

We saw quite a few of Coati over the days here - they're kind of like a racoon and just as much of a pest.

The place is also alive with beautiful flowers like these hibiscus.
