Fun

Mx had said that “Mum’s the boss and she said I can get up at 6.59” when Mt told him last night to make sure he waited til 7am to come out of his bedroom, so he was disappointed when he burst into my room and we found that my (accurate!) clock said only 6.56…. He had to jump in for a little cuddle for 3 minutes!
From that moment on, it seemed like he didn’t stop talking til he went back to bed this evening!
They had a couple of breakfasts (always their favourite meal) and Mt and I gradually came to with cups of tea, then I decided to try Lannan bakery again so drove down at 8am to join the queue, only to find that this morning although they were open they’d had some electrical problem and had a very limited range of things on sale…d’oh! Managed to pick a selection and brought them home to share…very tasty!
It was pretty sunny and fairly warm, so we headed off to Portobello and they enjoyed running around, burying themselves in sand, building a sandcastle and then jumping around in the waves until they were soaked and frozen stiff. Then comes that inevitable dash back to the towels and dry clothes and the struggle to change and pull on the new clothes over still sandy and damp limbs. Not made easier by AR being obsessed with ‘getting some privacy’ as she was getting changed.
We had some hot chocolate to warm up, then went to two different playgrounds and played a lot of chase and tag. Mx went off in a huff when we stopped the rule about the walls being ‘home’ whee you couldn’t be tagged…apparently he often avoids anything competitive as he hates to lose. AR was very quick to realise that you can tag back as soon as you’re tagged and was revelling in being the quickest. Interesting to see their different personalities even in little things like tactics in a game,
On the way back to the car we passed Civirinos pizza hut and, according to what’s now the law of holiday tradition, we had to stop for monster slices each. Delicious, and they devoured them!
Home and got all the sandy stuff in the washing machine and they both scattered to their rooms to have some chill time whilst Mt did some work and I got back to funeral prep and executor work. Still no sign of the death certificate so phoned to ask the coroner’s office when we might hear back…they’ll let me know (that’s what they said on Monday). Decided to set the time and date for the funeral anyway and had a couple of conversations with the funeral director and a nearby pub for afterwards. I suspect it will be a very small affair, since his friends from near his house aren’t available, L&M can’t come because of work shifts and my brother won’t be coming from Spain. Still no news from the few people I’ve managed to track down from his address book and Facebook either.
AR still wanted to stay home so I left her with Mt and took Mx down to the City Art Gallery to see if we could explore some of the science festival. He spent the entire walk telling me all about how you do horse racing (having passed a shop with a picture of a race in the window), involving vets, goggles, judges(?) and horse boxes, then segued seamlessly into telling me about Robotwars and how he’d like to be a judge on that, then how he’d like to be an astronaut “but not the boss one”, and finally how during his time on the school council with the strictest teacher in charge he’s the only one who hasn’t been told off yet. Phew!
He enjoyed making some slime, but had even more fun digging up a dinosaur and making an ammonite cast (thanks for the tip Tweedy!), then we walked home. On the way back, out of nowhere, he started asking if he could get bagpipes to learn how to play them. He had an answer to every question or objection I proposed, suggesting how I could do an internet search to find a shop and compare prices, find a YouTube tutorial on how to play them, and leave them here if mum and dad didn’t want the noise at their house!
Home and gave them some supper and made a veggie lasagne for Mt and me once they’d gone to bed. We talked through more stuff about probate and plans for the house rental/sale and I texted a few more people to give them funeral details.
A fun day…not sure what we’ll do tomorrow but that’s another day!
