Africa

An evening entitled Glimpses of Africa was open to everyone last night, held in the village hall. This map was made by a very clever couple who enlarged it so that it was visible from the door as visitors came in. I should have removed the flowers! but perhaps they give an idea of the size of the map.
We had bunting of African flags and several displays of African artefacts, plus local links, such as the visit of an African king to our village in 1901 ! He came for the coronation and travelled to Scotland before returning home to his country now part of western Zambia.
I put up a display on Chocolate from Ghana, with tasting pots of Fairtrade chocolate - they were popular!
Three villagers spoke briefly of their time lived in Africa, and the main speaker told us about the plight of the Nuba people in southern Sudan - as he said, there is no happy ending at present. It was very thought provoking.
The evening was well attended and worth the effort!
