Marking Time

Robert Bruce , king of Scotland (1306-1329)

This year is the 710th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn (1314 on 23/24 June .)
So plans for celebration are well advanced .  The site of this battlefield is only six miles down the road.

Among the events planned is an exhibition in Stirling by local artists. As one of those involved, I thought it was time to revisit the Visitor Centre to refresh my memory.

As a Welsh woman living in Scotland, I have mixed feelings. To whom do I owe allegiance? This iconic battle is etched into the Scottish consciousness and plays a pivotal role in the history of Scotland.

Today the site is a major international tourist attraction attracting a worldwide audience.
I am queasy about celebrating an event which saw thousands, both Scots and English, slain.

But Robert Bruce’s remarkable victory has resonated down the centuries with ideas of freedom, independence, patriotism, and heroism.
