Ferry point.

After a cold dip in the pool we went down to Ferry Point as the sun was shining and I wanted to see if the daffs were out. They were and looked lovely. Some of the blossom was out too.
This view looks down towards Dingwall. The River Peffery was ‘made’ into a canal. The new scheme was designed by Thomas Telford in 1815 where the river was widened and deepened and part of the rivers course diverted. Although this worked well for a while with goods like coal and lime coming up in one direction and Grain, bark and timber the other. The canal was the furthest North in the Uk and only 1.1 miles long.
It’s downfall came when the railways arrived and as you can see from the photo the canal would often get silted up and the costs of repairs were high.
It’s still a lovely area for a walk and during the last wife’s years work has been going on to restore the river to it’s original path hoping that the flood plain will work to reduce flooding in the lower parts of Dingwall.
