Monsieur Jacques

The life-size statue Monsieur Jacques by Oswald Wenckebach in Rotterdam city and many Rotterdammers have taken it to their hearts.

Monsieur Jacques is not a portrait of a real person, but the imagination of the smug middle-class man in general. Since 1959 he has stood in the same spot, looking around emphatically and doing nothing: his chest out, his nose up, his hat in his hands behind his back.
