Cherry blossoming

This is the cherry tree variety that grew on the street where I lived as a kid. At this time of year, the branches would be laden with blossoms. Then for a week or so, we had piles of pink snow as the blossom fell. It was glorious.

Then the council decided it was “the wrong type of cherry”, so they cut all the trees down. Too much blossom clogged the drains and the roots were damaging paths. No warning, just gone.

I still have a chunk of branch I took from the pile they left and I’ve had it for over 30 years. Now I’ve got new cherry friends and I smile to see the pink snow once more.
