Matron

Well, this is a lovely little café at the hospital, run by good characters with humorous memories of this room long before it was a café.
I was under a 'lock in' here before they closed for the day and heard a number of memories about the era.
Namely, this used to be Matron's office 'back in the day'.. a very serious regimental woman according to reflections, but nevertheless ran the wards superbly, cleanly, without fuss, and kept order! This included making sure the tea trolley served on time in times of crisis, and scolding the 5 or 6 male patients who had absconded to the pub one evening, or how a staff member reported feeling sick to the Matron and she responded .. 'No no you can't be sick here I have enough sick people here already'!
How different ... in a sense 'good old days' where that would never happen now, but where there was a sociability lacking in today's faceless workplaces in general, and well.. lots of things. I had a good cup of tea here and bought a second hand book as well. Made the afternoon for me!
