The Burning of the Böögg

By the time I got the chance to post this blip, the Böögg will be no more.

On the third Monday of April, the fine folks of Zurich celebrate Sechseläuten - and the climax of that spring festival is the burning of a snow man effigy called the Böögg.  The figure stands on top of a huge bonfire, and the time taken from lighting the bonfire to the (explosive filled) head exploding is supposed to foretell something about the summer weather.

From what I've read, the whole event seems to combine elements of Up Helly Aa and Guy Fawkes with a little bit of GroundHog Day thrown in for good measure.

Must try and time a future visit to Zurich so I get to see the burning. The extras show the bonfire being constructed early this morning (before I headed for the station for Paris, London and Oxford).
