I have successfully photographed many Muslim women in South Asia, but in the USA it is much more difficult. I think this is so for a couple of reasons - some religious modesty but more importantly, their feeling that they are an unappreciated and vulnerable segment of Western society. Today's subject was willing to be photographed but not a straight ahead portrait. I was glad of that, because when she turned her head, she showed the embroidery on her scarf. I have seen many times that clothing worn in the name of religious modesty is often transformed into a fashion statement.
