Ear of corn

My final day in Mozambique on this visit was a busy and useful one. I went for an early evening drink with Ana and passed a heavy police presence around a soirée at the Ukrainian embassy. Inside the gate I could see half a crowd of dapper African men in suits and the other half of bald-headed white men in tight black t-shirts and blue jeans.

I am fairly confident some of the Mozambicans must have been important members of FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique - Liberation Front of Mozambique), the movement that won independence from Portugal and the party that has been in power since the country’s first democratic elections. Despite increasing frustration at the way FRELIMO governs, the party’s presence is unavoidable in Mozambique. These faded posters show the party’s emblem of an ear of corn over a traditional drum.
