Isle of Lewis.

Stornoway.

Good Friday. Fishing boats in the harbour. And Pleasure craft, from much of Northern Europe. We stood for ages watching the seals in the harbour. Never did get to Lewes Castle.

And part of the Iolaire Monument. I’d read a lot before we came, and we chose to come towards sunset. A tragedy; 1January 1919. At least 201 (205?) men of the 283 on board ship drowned when the Admiralty Yacht HMY Iolaire struck the Beast of Holm rocks on approach to Stornaway harbour. They had survived all that the “Great War” could throw at them, to perish here. They were mainly Lewis men, many communities suffered. There are several features at the memorial site. The rope item represents the heaving line that John F McLeod of Ness swam ashore with. He saved 40 lives. People ashore watched in horror. And helped. This memorial was unveiled in 2019.

Other photo is the sunset from the Iolaire monument area.
