Matthew Buchan, Wine & Spirits Dealers, Leith

I was meeting with a couple of my friends today and we had decided to go for lunch to Mithas Indian Restaurant in Dock Place, Leith as John had already been there and was singing its praises. The meal was absolutely great - a far cry from your usual curry house, definitely an Indian fine dining experience and voted best Indian Restaurant in Scotland in 2012.

Prior to this and to earn our treat so-as-to-speak, we decided that we would have a mooch round Leith and take a few photos. As an East Lothian coastal dweller I was looking for some urban grunge as an antidote to birds, flowers and landscape work. I chanced on this mural just off Bernard Street in Carpet Lane. It is the former premises of Matthew Buchan, master wine and spirit merchant. It is where William Sanderson served his apprenticeship before going on to start his own business of William Sandersons, Distillers who produced the famour Vat 69.
