On Some Days

Hemingway's Whiskey . . . Guy Clark

We are on another visit to the high country this time to stay two nights at Blue Mountain Station in the Four Peaks Range in South Canterbury.  We left the highway at Fairley and drove north through the rolling tussock hills beside the Orari River.  The accomodation is a restored sheperds hut built in the late 1880's and called Basin Creek Hut.  We shared it with three women who had bought their horses to go treking.  They added to the experience for us and the website suggests BYO Horses.  The whiskey is a bottle I chose from my late brother in laws collection.  It is mellow and warming.  We cooked over the fire and the extra is taken from the bunkroom.
