Totem town

Had a lovely few hours wandering round Juneau, the  state capital of Alaska.

It’s a lovely town, with a frontier feeling to it, and yes, there are a lot of totem poles around.

The town was founded in 1881 by Joe Juneau, a gold prospector.

Juneau is unique among the 49 U.S. capitals on mainland North America in that there are no roads connecting the city to the rest of the state or North America. This is due to the rugged terrain surrounding all sides of the town, which means that goods and transportation is undertaken by sea or plane.

It’s definitely a place to visit again for us.
