curns' corner

Hanoi

PY did get to open a lot of his presents and cards this morning, which was nice. A lovely hamper from Mum and Dad turned up yesterday and sat on the doorstep throughout the day as we were both out at our offices. I forgot about it yesterday, as PY brought it in when he came home, but it was not taken from the doorstep (which is a relief).

We also had to pack because, after eating lunch, we headed straight down to The Island.

Lunch was at Six by Nico at Canary Wharf. We arrived about fifteen minutes early, but they showed us to our table as it wasn't full — although a good number of people were dining. We started with cocktails. The menu is a set menu of six courses. The restaurant changes the theme every six weeks (I guess those are the sixes of the place's name).

First up was the Bún Riêu (described on the menu as Vietnamese Shellfish Foam, Spiced Pork Ragu, Crispy Noodles And Wild Rice), and while I am not sure what shellfish foam is, it was delicious and probably the tastiest of all dishes (and the one pictured). Course 3 was smoked beef noodles, which came with a bone marrow sauce but wasn't quite as rich as I had imagined. Course four was coalfish, which came with coconut & coriander chutney. I had to look it up, as it's better known as Pollock.   For the fifth course, we added the extra tempura king prawn (as it came with hot & sour pineapple) to our tamarind glazed chicken. It took a while for the prawns to be served, but I am glad I waited to eat them together.

Dessert was Bánh Trôi Tàu (described as a palm sugar delice, kumquat, lime & ginger mousse), which was delicious and came with a piped 'Happy Birthday' for PY. The whole experience was relaxed and delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. I am already looking at the New York menu, which replaces the Hanoi one in a couple of weeks.
