Green Man

Travelled back today and had an excellent journey.
I took this photo yesterday. This green man is on the gate post of the Toby Carvery in Bolton, a fine building which was once one of the largest houses in the area. it is still a wonderful property. The house was called Watermillock.
Built originally built for Mr Thomas Thwaites, of Bank House, Sharples, head of the firm of Eden and Thwaites, bleachers, the house was still unfinished when he died on 21 October 1882 at the age of 49.
The building of Watermillock was commenced in 1880. After his death it was completed by his executors and his son.
It has been a hospital, a retreat, and during the Spanish Civil War,it was used as a sanctuary for refugee children and occupied by 50 refugee children from the war torn Basque province of Spain, most of them from the Bilbao area. How I wish we could have stayed longer and seen more of our family but we will be going back before the month is out.
