The Hula Hut

We flew out to our beach house late this afternoon. It is on an island called Great Barrier Island which is about 60 miles from Auckland. Flying there in small planes is the easiest.

Today we had an interesting flight. There was a thick layer of low cloud which means that landing on the island might be difficult. From takeoff we headed up through the clouds into beautiful sunshine. The clouds below us were like a blanket of snow. We flew for half an hour and there was no sign of the island. It was in the clouds below us. The pilot warned us that we may have to turn around and head back to Auckland if we can't find a gap in the clouds.

Luckily for us he flew past the island and then dropped down through the clouds. Fortunately we could make out the sea and a bit of coastline. He flew in across the top of the waves and under the cloud and managed to bring the plane into land. By the time we picked up our car and got to the house it was dark.

We lit the fire and the candles and were happy to have made it.
