Hidden gem

This little church is hidden, away from the road, and many people don't even know it is there. Even its name, Little Bookham Church, puts it in the shadow of its neighbour, Great Bookham. At the time of Domesday there were just seven peasant families living in Little Bookham, and the church wasn't built until the twelfth century. It is still just a single room and has no dedication.

There is a massive yew tree in the churchyard, and a footpath runs from one side to the other. I walked this path one day, and it runs from Effingham Church past Little Bookham Church through to Great Bookham Church. I was alone on the path that day but felt the company of all the people who over the centuries had walked from one village to another on this ancient path.
