So Close

Velvet Morning

all ears and eyes
your antlers at attention
we face each other
cloaked in morning air

yearling wearing velvet
and I white robed
we tremble together
our breathing softly shared

you wheel and gallop
stopping again wary
our communal air exhaled
explodes, fueling your snorting leap

For the Record
This day came in humid and hot, 80 degrees before 8.

When the young buck and I met before 6:30 in the garden, the air was heavy, a wall of humid air met me as I walked out the door. He and I were very close, I had to back up to get his velvet antlers in the frame of my 300mm which is 420mm with the tele extender. The sound he made when he turned to leap away was loud and ominous!
