Does He Think He's A Poet?

What if he discovered
that all those poems
he thought he'd made up
had, in fact, been written
by other people?

He'd read them elsewhere,
stored them in his head,
and, as time passed,
forgotten they weren't his?

Anyone feeling generous
might regard such a thing
as an honest mistake.

Others might say 'On yer bike!'

He'd certainly have a shedload
of shamefaced apologies
to deliver

and money to pay back.

It would be like
he was walking around
with a bag of swag.

It would be like
he'd cooked the books.

It wouldn't be
a feather in his cap.

I think he'd be tempted
to keep such a thing
under his hat.

He certainly wouldn't
write a poem about it.
