harvest of passage

I've never really closely inspected the various insecty things which often end up trapped on arms after cycling or running during the insect season. Back in Lincolnshire the predominant infestation was a small black beetle-type insect commonly referred to as a thunderbug which expressed a noticeable preference for white or yellow clothing. There were a few similar things elsewhere on my arm but this one caught my attention as it looks vaguely lousy, not something one would expect to have encountered in the air amongst the miniature beetles and traffic-particles. I did brush past a couple of pathside plants this afternoon when avoiding people, their dogs or their children (though I did at least receive one slightly over-effusive but nevertheless genuine-sounding "thank you very much indeed!" for allowing a codger-pair to pass which makes a change from the usual blank looks and silence received when exhibiting courtesy) which could have allowed a non-airborne beastie to be picked up, especially when my arms were made extra-sticky with anti-burning paste as well as sweat. The things which often end up in my eyes look like fairly standard flies of the order Diptera though they're often little more than a black squidge and a bent pair of wings by the time they've been blinked and wiped out if picked up when bicycling without sunglasses or running (when sunglasses are not worn).
