Pineapple Lily

Back at home after yesterdays away-blip, here are the wonderfully exotic flowers of Eucomis bicolor, seen close -up.

It's not a Pineapple plant. It's not a Lily! In fact this summer flowering bulb, originating from South Africa is in the same family as Asparagus ..... work that one out!

There's a tuft of leafy bracts atop the flowers, reminscent of those on a pineapple. The stem is attractively spotted too. I'll try and get a decent shot of the whole plant one day (...if I can lose the distracting background!)
