Between fen and mountains

By Tickytocky

I took my brother to the Gordon Boswell Romany Museum which offers an insight into the lives of travellers through the Boswell family history. I have intended to visit this local museum for years but have never got round to it. I have been missing a treat. The museum has a unique collection of superb, traditional Romany horse-drawn Vardos (caravans), carts and harness alongside photographs, letters and memorabilia. Even better is the fact that Gordon, who is well known locally (the family owns the local scrap yard), gives a personal tour and is full of information and anecdotes about life on the road and the Appleby Horse Fair. There are a couple of beautiful 1970's more recent caravans. This one was commissioned around 1970 and cost £1000 per foot to build. We calculated that this might have cost £300,000 or more in today's money.

More photos of the museum are on the flikr set.
