Towering

The road to San Gimignano was twisty-turny and uppy-downy to an extraordinary degree. While the views were fantastic, by journey's end I think the kids had had their fill of Tuscan scenery.

They enjoyed the towers and narrow streets of the medieval city though, and a cone from the World's Best Ice Cream Shop (official).

I've always been led to believe that San Gimignano's towers are a monument to wealth, pride, envy and competition. So couldn't help listening in when a woman asked the man she was with, "why did they build them so tall, then?"

"Lack of space, innit," he replied loftily.

After getting some birthday presents for George as the sun went down, we found a mercifully faster route home.
