East Neuk

The East Neuk of Fife is an area of the coast of Fife, Scotland, which is geographically ill-defined but nonetheless stirs local passions.

"Neuk" is the Scots word for nook or corner, and the East Neuk is generally accepted to comprise the fishing villages of the most northerly part of the Firth of Forth and the land and villages slightly inland therefrom.  It includes Elie and Earlsferry, Colinsburgh, St Monans, Pittenweem, Arncroach, Carnbee, Anstruther, Cellardyke, Kilrenny, Crail and Kingsbarns.

We walked today with the club the eight miles from St. Monans to Crail, a wonderful walk in this unique area.  My photograph is of one of the villages, Pittenweem, which is a beautiful wee place.  At one point in our journey we were delighted to see a pod of dolphins cavorting in the water not far from land.

Scotland is a small country with very varied scenery, which is I suppose why visitors flock from all over the world, and even given our rather temperamental weather, are usually not disappointed.  The East Neuk of Fife is I think unique.  It's villages are very pretty with their whitewashed walls and pan tiled roofs, and the area is known for dry and sunny weather, more so than many areas of Scotland.

We had a wonderful walk, and had some time in the beautiful village of Crail to walk around the harbour, have a drink, visit the pottery, it was just magic.

The weather was kind to us too, not so warm as home, but sunny and with a little breeze which helped to cool us down.  I hope you all had such a wonderful day doing what you enjoy!
