Work of a Kelpie?

This wooden Salamander, found on a tree in Keith Hall Woods in Aberdeenshire, has obviously been turned, not to stone, but to wood. Perhaps the Kelpie (pixie, brownie, leprechaun) was a young one who hadn't yet conquered the magic necessary for turning to stone.

Would the technical term be 'lignified'?
