Left Hanging
Ooh another linguistic excursion.
Hands up everyone who knows what a dangling participle is?
It is something that this Blipper is guilty of all the time.
A dangling participle is a modifier that doesn't seem to modify anything. We'll try an example "Driving like a maniac, the penguin was hit and killed". But the penguin wasn't driving (flippers, short body and webbed feet make it difficult to drive). The sentence makes it seem as if the penguin was driving. And there dangles our participle.
Much better would be "driving like a maniac, Donald Trump hit the penguin and killed it." Here we are left in no doubt who did what. The blameless penguin was the victim of a man who cares for himself and no-one else.
A little bit of politics and a bit of grammar. You never stop learning. And may your participles never dangle.
