Fish barriers

The barriers are intended to slow down cyclists as they travel along the eastern end of the Union Canal in Edinburgh. There are several different ones with this showing fish and waterweeds. At the Lochrin Basin there are boards telling of the history of the area. One states that because of the rivalry between the new railways and the canals there was a price war and in 1843 passengers could travel between Edinburgh and Glasgow for First Class 3/6 (about 17p) and Second Class 2/4 (about 12p). In 1845 the night boat First Class cost 2/6 and Second Class cost 1/8. Today a single train journey costs £12.50.
